Inspirational Words

“With the right words, you can change the world”

~ Charlotte A. Cavatica in the 2006 movie version of Charlotte’s Web ~

I love words.  I love how words weave into stories that morph into pictures that grab my imagination.  I prefer a good book over a movie any day.  Words, well written, allow me to create my own movie.  Predominately, I think in words.

Words, phrases, quotes have the power of motivation, connection

They can uplift and make you smile

Be a call to action:

They can

Or they can just be FUN*

All you need to do is

*Thanks to Kitsgal for ‘tickle the day’.

My hundred acre wood

Childhood imagination is a wonderful thing, something that we can toss aside as adults as fanciful and even outrageous.

It is also inspiration – not only for a youngster; but for you, now.  Just for one moment, allow yourself to wander back to that spot in your mind, where all is enchanting:

“Wherever they go, and whatever happens to them on the way, in that enchanted place on the top of the forest, a little boy and his Bear will always be playing.”

I LOVE Winnie-the-Pooh.   My portal into my wee imagination.  I would gather my stuffed animals and play 100 acre wood, blankets and cushions and chairs all over the living room creating the map above.  Whenever we crossed a bridge over a rushing stream, I wanted to play “pooh sticks”.  I talked continually about Pooh Bear, Piglet and the rest.  My sister-in-law sewed me all the characters.  (I still have them).  I wanted a Pooh Bear birthday party.  I wanted a huge tree door to my room, just like Christopher Robin, so I could be in the 100 acre wood all the time.

Every summer, my family would gather at “the Lake” – a piece of family property with cabins and wildness and of course, a lake.  I transported the world of Pooh to our summer home and created my own hundred acre wood.  I made the “Pooh Trails” and led everyone on an adventure tour of the 100 acre wood.

I found a beaver-chewed stick that looked exactly like Piglet and wanted my grandfather to make it into something special, with agate eyes.  He had never heard of Winne-the-Pooh!  I was in disbelief – how could you NOT know Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga, Roo, Rabbit, Owl and Tigger!   We had to read him the stories.

Me and Buppo

Just for today, go, find your own hundred acre wood; unleash your imagination.  As Pooh says:

“Don’t underestimate the value of Doing Nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering.”

Is Inspiration yoga?

Last week I wrote I was inspired to create by Pink Snow.  I made a piece of jewellery that I hope will invoke cherry blossoms and all that cherry blossoms mean for the wearer.

It started me wondering – what is inspiration and where does it come from?  Is it the same as motivation?  Or are they more like a pair…inspiration leads and motivation follows?  What about when we are inspired by a person?

To me, there are nuances in meaning.  I can seek inspiration in many ways – through nature, by doing something fun, by trying something new, by reading or listening to music, or even seeing someone else’s creative work.  And when I say I am inspired by someone I admire or who succeeded at something I’d like to do, I am really speaking about motivation to be a “better” me; to reach for goals and aspirations; to uncover more of my character, of my self.

Of course I had to turn to Wikipedia:

Inspiration may refer to:

  • Artistic inspiration, sudden creativity in artistic production
  • Biblical inspiration, the doctrine in Judeo-Christian theology concerned with the divine origin of the Bible
  • Creative inspiration, sudden creativity when a new invention is created
  • Inhalation, the movement of air into the lungs

Wait a sec….What was that??????    Inspiration can mean Inhalation as in breathe?!

Indeed, under artistic inspiration, good ol’ Wiki offers this:

Therefore, the invocations of the muses and the various poetic gods (Apollo and Dionysus, in particular) are earnest prayers for inspiration, for the breath of the god. (emphasis mine)

There it is:  Breath of the god = Prana – life force; Pranayama – control of life force through the control of breath.  Yoga.

Inspiration is yoga

Yoga is inspiration

Music for the creative soul

Today on We Scout Wednesday, we are talking music.

I LOVE music… I prefer music, especially live music, over a movie. I enjoy many genres of music, and sometimes I am unable to put a label on what I like best.  I once told my uncle that I liked all music except for country and opera…he being a huge opera fan gasped and said “how can you compare the two in the same breath”!

Live music especially gets me tingling.  I have been to classical concerts, marching bands, celtic show cases, rock concerts, festivals and pub / bar bands.

My favourite is a festival.  At festivals, you get to sample music you may not normally listen to and be surprised.  I became hooked on music festivals when I lived in Smithers, BC.  (pop 5,000).  Smithers has a long running festival Midsummer Music Festival, see this years headliners here.  Now these may not be household names, but that is precisely my point.  You get to discover, hear new stuff and groove to new sound.

I found one of my favourite bands at Roots Fest here in Victoria a number of years ago (poor festival died, lack of funds, RIP).  Brother is from Australia, but they play the music festival circuit, so if they come near you, go and see them!  You can hear their music on the website (it plays as soon as you click on it, fair warning!).  It’s a blend of, get this, celtic rock, with bagpipes and didgeridoo.

I have collected music on my travels, almost as much as I have collected jewellery from markets.  While I may be a rocker girl at heart, with my (somewhat) oldies rock station on in the background as I work, what really gets me going is new music, different music, upbeat fun music.

I had forgotten that I love this…now I have to dig out my packed away CD’s to load on my mp3, my computer, so I can play them whenever I need a hit.

What music do you like?  Do you have a fave, someone you would never ever miss in concert?  Links welcome so I can hear new stuff too.

Inspired by ~ Life

Everyday there are the small things that inspire us to live better lives.  Inspire hope.  Inspire creativity.  Inspire us to be ourselves.   To go for it.  Or even just give us a small smile.

These are the moments to collect and string together.  To wear proudly and to use in whatever endeavour you happen to be undertaking that day.  Or the next.

Inspiration is all around us, all the time, if we only open our eyes.

What will inspire you today?

The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. But the Great teacher INSPIRES ~ Willam Arthur Ward

I realize that the focus of my class is me and only me; to do the best I can each and every time I step on the mat.

However the role of the teacher is vital.  The teacher is the conductor – moving the energy of the room, grabbing our minds so we have no option but to focus on us, our breath, moving as one.  Commanding and correcting with compassion, a great instructor becomes our mind so that we don’t have to think.

Only DO.

Challenging, sweaty – hell yes.

Tomorrow the studio starts a 30 day challenge.  We have been talking about the challenge, and of course there are always those that just can’t commit at this time to a challenge.  It just seems too much for them.  So, I am telling them to create their own challenge.

I am inspired by what some of them have come up with:

  • “I’m going to come every Tuesday 6am” – a student who practices regular, but had never taken a 6am until this morning.
  • “I’m doing doubles 3 x a week” – also a regular 5-6 times a week practitioner
  • “I’m going to challenge myself to come 3x this week” – some one who comes regularly, but only once a week.

Just a small sampling of creative challenges.  I am inspired by people’s personal motivation – especially those folks who are new.  Their enthusiasm for the practice is just fabulous, even as they struggle to “get it right”.  I am inspired by the woman at our studio who has now come somewhere around 700 days straight, likely more, every single day the studio is open, she is there.  It is not a question for her.  I am inspired by those whose bodies are broken and need to be repaired – by the effort they put into class because of the way it makes them feel (so much better).

The students around the studio have been noticing that I am practicing every day.  I shared in the change room that I am doing 101 days and now they are my “watch dogs”, keeping me honest.  It’s nice support and they motivate me.  In turn, I hope I inspire them to take up their own challenge and run with it.
